Create keyword rules so TangBoe suggests the right category
Created Aug 6, 2026 · Updated Sep 16, 2026

Category rules suggest a category from text on an item, such as a shop name or note. You still choose the keyword and destination category — TangBoe just stops you picking the same category every time.
What Boe helps with here
- Match keywords from shop name, message, or note
- Suggest the category you set when a similar item is logged
- Prefer a more specific rule when several rules match
Create a rule
- Open Categories, then go to category rules
- Tap Add rule
- Enter a keyword such as
7-Elevenorelectricity - Pick the category to use when that keyword is found
- Enable the rule and save
The category must belong to your account. Avoid words that are too broad, such as “buy” or “pay”, because they match too many items.
How TangBoe picks a rule
- It checks keywords against shop name, message, or note
- Only enabled rules are used
- If several match, the longer, more specific keyword wins
- When the item has a type, only categories for that type are considered
- If no rule matches, TangBoe does not force a category change
Learning from items
TangBoe may learn keywords from notes on saved income or expense items when auto-learning is on. Still check the suggested category before every save.
Delete a rule
Open the rule list, pick a rule you don’t need, then delete. Deleting a rule does not change transactions already saved.
